Why We Ask for Your Budget
Clients are sometimes reluctant to reveal their budget. But there are good reasons why we ask.
As a full-service, custom web design agency, one of the first questions we ask a potential client is, “What’s your budget for the project?” It can sometimes catch people off guard or even make them uncomfortable – and I get it – I used to be uncomfortable asking. Because nobody wants to overpay or feel like they’re showing their cards too early, right? But there are good reasons we ask this question early in the process, and it all has to do with making sure we build the best possible solution for that client.
Of the hundreds of websites we’ve designed and built over the years, no two have been exactly alike. And no two budgets have been the same. We’ve built tiny sites that are quick and lean, all the way up to massive, complex sites for national brands. And we’re happy doing both.
The bottom line is: We don’t ask for your budget to take all the money. There are specific reasons we do it:
- Tailor solutions to fit your specific needs and resources
- Prioritize features and functionalities that offer the most value
- Suggest alternatives or phased approaches, if necessary
- Avoid wasting time on proposals that don’t match your expectations
This is beneficial to our clients in several ways:
- Ensures you get the best value for your investment
- Helps avoid scope creep and unexpected costs
- Allows for more accurate project timelines
- Facilitates open discussion about project priorities
What if I don’t know what an appropriate budget should be?
If you’re just starting out and haven’t talked to agencies or gotten a good idea of what websites cost, that’s a great question to ask us. We’re happy to talk typical price ranges and what you get for what.
Let’s Get Transparent: Our Pricing
So in the name of transparency, let’s talk about our pricing. In the last couple of years, most sites using our full-fledged, fully custom process have cost between $13,000 – $17,000. This might seem like a significant investment, and it is. But what goes into that price tag? A lot more than you might think. A $15,000 website isn’t just a pretty design. It’s a comprehensive, turn-key package tailored to your specific needs. Our comprehensive custom website process delivers:
- Multi-faceted Research
- Analytics and SEO Strategy
- Content Strategy
- Strategic Wireframing
- Creative Design
- Custom Development
Of course, not every website we’ve built has required that kind of budget. We’ve worked with various budget ranges, each offering different levels of customization and features:
- Entry-level ($2000 – $5,000): Template design, very minimal research and wireframing, minimal essential features
- Startup-level ($5,000 – $10,000): Simple custom design, essential features
- Mid-range ($10,000 – $20,000): Full custom design, extensive research and strategy, advanced features, content creation
- High-end ($20,000+): Complex functionality, extensive content, advanced e-commerce
- Enterprise-level ($60,000 – $100,000+): Comprehensive digital ecosystems, advanced integrations, multi-site platforms
Transparency in web design pricing matters because it builds trust and fosters long-term relationships. By being open about our pricing and the value we provide, we aim to educate clients about the importance of professional web design and development.
In an industry where pricing can often feel obscure or arbitrary, we believe in clarity and honesty. When we ask about your budget, it’s not to take advantage โ it’s to start a conversation. It’s about understanding your needs, managing expectations, and working together to create a website that not only looks great but also delivers real value to your business or organization.
So, when we ask about your budget, don’t be alarmed. It’s an opportunity to have an open, productive discussion about your project’s scope, priorities, and potential.
