Getting Apple Maps to Open on a Website Link

Google Maps is pretty good. It’s been around for a long time and it gets you there most of the time. It’s widely used and considered the standard mapping app and for that it should be applauded. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I like Apple Maps.

So starting today I’ve updated our ‘Find Us‘ link in the navigation to open up Apple Maps if you are on an iOS device, or browsing the site on MacOS. If you’re using Android you’ll get the choice to open in Google Maps app, the Google Maps website, or (I think) any other map app you have installed.

So how is it done?

Turns out it’s quite simple. Using the Apple Map links URL reference, it’s as simple as replacing the Google map web link with a similarly structured link from Apple:

http://maps.apple.com/?q=Spigot+Design

There are more complicated ways to do it, but this way hits the sweet spot: It’s simple and it’s covered by most use cases.

Of course if it isn’t working for you let me know. Unless by ‘not working’ you mean it doesn’t open Google Maps. There I cannot help you.
