    Hi Bryan
Great to read your article and thanks for posting your research. I’ve just extended my mobileme account for another year as well as upgrading to family pack to get my girlfriend up and running so we can sync calendars. I quite agree with all your points. Bells & whistles are Apple’s trademark and I’ve been easily sold on them only to find that in some cases the functionality is basic (and can be found elsewhere for free-as you have pointed out) limited (so that you need to use another programme to do more – iWeb for example) or that in the end I don’t really use it (eg Gallery).

I’d add Delicious.com to your options for (social) bookmarking – wonderfully explained here by CommonCraft [http://www.commoncraft.com/bookmarking-plain-english]

So I guess the time you took to undo MobileMe and switch the consolidated services it provides over to all those providers was only worth ~$72:

I hope you spent very little time doing it…

it seems Apple keeps pushing the people away while costing some us more all of the time. Its time to say good bye MM. It was great why it latest but for the money today you can get a whole lot more for less.

    Maybe Apple will smarten up.

[...] I really like Apple’s iCloud service. Moving back to Apple after dropping MobileMe back in late 2009 has been relatively painless; The setup was simple, the service is automatic, and it’s [...]

After researching this, I understand that icloud doesn’t let you simply “drop” microsoft office files in icloud as does mobile me. Icloud requires converting the files to numbers and pages programs which then must be converted back to microsoft excel or word. Am I wrong?

As the date for the end of MobileMe is getting near I am looking for the best ways to have all those things MMe use to sync together using other methods. As you described I pretty much went with all those solutions. Dropbox and Sugarsync seem like the best ways to have large files saved over the internet and Xmarks for my bookmarks though there was a slight issue with Firefox and Safari integrating, but I solved in right away. Over the next few weeks I will keep track on the progress of how well it all works. Now to move my webhost to another place. I will check out HostExcellence.
